Wandin Valley Estate Single Vineyard Viognier 2009

Wandin Valley winemaker Matt Burton has made a viognier here that pleases me – something pretty rare. It comes from the Lovedale area Camp Rd vineyard and Matt gave it barrel fermentation, with only 20 percent of the batch put in new oak. I think it has imparted a subtle oak counterpoint and controlled the excessive exotics that spoil many viogniers. The wine shines brassy-light gold in the glass and has enticing tangelo and jasmine aromas. Crisp apricot flavour features on the front of the palate and orange peel and savoury fruit elements integrate perfectly with restrained hazelnutty oak. Steely acid refreshes at the finish.

“It is dark garnet and has scents of cassis, caramel and tobacco leaf. Silky smooth blackcurrant flavour flows onto the front palate and glace cherry, dark chocolate and nutmeg fruit characters meld with vanillin oak on the middle palate. Lingering berry fruit and soft earthy tannins combine at the finish.”
